This month we are featuring Iowa City band Shades, a brother and sister collabo whose debut EP ‘Can’t See The Haters’ is currently making waves across the music sphere. We wanted to get some further deets on the band’s project and gain some further insight into their ethos. Check out our interview with Shades members Casey and Mary Mattes below.

Shades_Interview_Band

Can each of you share with us how you got started in music?

Our dad is a professional guitar player, so we’ve grown up with music as long as we can remember. I’ve played in small bands with friends since high school, and decided to pursue music on my own while studying it in college. Once I noticed my sister’s passion for the same creative arts, I knew we needed to team up to create something amazing.

What inspired you to team up to form a band?

Music is about expression. We’ve both been through so much, and we know that our fans have too. Mary puts her heart and soul into the lyrics of each song we produce, bringing forward problems that people our age are facing daily. We wanted to find an impactful way to address these issues presented throughout life and make our fans feel as though they’re not alone.

Shades has a very eclectic sound, who would you say are some of your musical influences? What types of music is in your playlists right now?

We’re huge fans of Twenty One Pilots, Jon Bellion, AJR, and Halsey. We’ve also heard that our indie pop sound reminds fans of The Chainsmokers, Daya, and James Blake.

Shades_Cant_See_HatersWhat made you decide to come up with the name Shades for your band? What is its significance?

We wear our Shades so we can’t see the haters!

Can you describe what a typical creative session would be to come up with a new song? What goes into the whole experience that we as listeners hear on the other end.

We’ll be creating some BTS videos to demonstrate the answer to this question. But for now, I (Casey) produce instrumentals and hand them over to Mary. She writes lyrics, we record, and I mix/master the music. Our beats and lyrics stem from very personal experiences.

‘Can’t See The Haters’ is your first EP, how did you decide on the song selections for the band’s debut?

We created an array of songs, but chose these because of their importance in creating our image. They’re based around our band name and everything we stand for. And, man. This EP is just the beginning.

Most kids today are just looking for a good beat it seems, especially in the mainstream. How important do you feel lyrical content is in music?

Lyrics are everything. A song without meaningful lyrics is wasted potential.

As an indie band and being in control of all aspects of your art, are there any difficulties or challenges in putting your music out and if so what are they and how do you manage them?

It’s difficult getting your music out there for just about any band without many industry connections. We’re based out of Iowa City, IA, so that’s a tricky work-around as well. Our band manager, Teressa Mattes, is doing a great job distributing our music to our passionate fans around the globe via the internet. Mary and I are perfecting our live show now, as well as recording more dope tracks for future EPs/albums. We’re going to continue putting in the work! It’s all about the grind, after all.

How long did it take you to work on your EP?

Almost 2 months!

Now that the EP is out, how do you feel about its reception?

We love seeing the feedback on social media outlets such as Instagram and Facebook. Our fans are the best!

Can you tell us a little bit about the music scene in Iowa City?

Iowa City has a very tight knit music scene. Most bands who play here are still in college, except for the occasional more prominent artists who plays at Blue Moose. I’ve played as a solo artist at Blue Moose a number of times, and am looking forward to returning with Mary this year.

What are the best and worst things about working with your brother/sister?

We value family most out of anything out there. It’s amazing to be able to collaborate with the people you know and love, and at the same time work together to bring new experiences and ideas to the table when it comes to creating new music. We both have our own taste in music, so sometimes that delays creating new tracks, but it is always for the best. If we both approve a song we work together to produce, we know that fans of multiple genres and sounds will too!

Are there any other acts that the band would want to collaborate with in the future?

We’re down for anything.

The new year is really just starting and you definitely kicked in some doors with your project, what is next for Shades?

Keep an eye out for our next EP drop at the end of March 2018! It’s as gritty and lux as it gets…

Shades is an American indie pop band formed in September 2017. The duo consists of siblings Casey Mattes (producer), and Mary Mattes (singer). Shades is a DIY pop group who writes, produces, and mixes/masters their own material from their home studio in Iowa City, Iowa.

Casey Mattes’ original music has been featured on “Spaced Out Magazine”, “VERSED”, and has won Artist Prolist’s Platinum Spotlight Challenge TWICE within the same year. Mary Mattes has been featured throughout Casey’s original songs over the last 4 years. Mid 2017, the brother and sister decided to combine their talents into the hit duo you see today.

Shades’ music style has been described as “dynamic”, combining elements of electropop, alternative hip hop, and EDM. Their lyrics, written by Mary, are poetry-based and reflect the all-too-real emotional states of many twenty-somethings who struggle to thrive in today’s world filled with hate.

In January of 2018, Shades dropped their first EP, “Can’t See The Haters”, consisting of 6 songs. “You can either let the hate blind you, or you can block it out,” said Casey, referring to their latest release. “This EP both introduces our band name to the world and describes the underlying meaning behind every piece of work we create. We wear our shades so we can’t see the haters, and we encourage you to do the same.” Casey continued, “This EP is just the beginning. We’re so excited to share with you what’s next.”

Their opening track on the EP, “Kill the Darkness”, was written to express the frustration built from the blossoming of an irrational, yet sweet fixation. Mary mentioned that this song represents an expression of consequence; when you let yourself recklessly fall in love with someone you can’t have, knowing damn well you’re diving into some murky morals.

In a nutshell, “Not Really Sorry” is a snarky, taunting song written about rejection. But more so, it’s lyrics represent the celebration of a sheer reluctance to compromise independence for a relationship. “Independence is an empowering trait,” said Mary. “This song for me conveys a realization of self importance and self empowerment… It’s just snarky as heck.”

Rainbowz” is by far the most unique song on the EP, loved by fans favoring all types of musical genres. “Writing this song was a unique experience. At the time I had just become homeless, so I was bunking in my car for the night. With nothing to occupy my attention, my mind fell down a Wizard of Oz rabbit hole, puzzling over how f***ing weird of a story it is, and all the conspiracy theory potential it has… Naturally, that segued into forcefully rapping about rainbows. But, in all seriousness, this song is an adaptation of the story’s concept- an interpretation reflecting my state of mind at the time.”

The statirecally written, romp of a song “American Dream” describes the current state of both our country and the world we’re forever evolving, for better or for worse. “I’m forever going to utilize social and political f***ery for creative inspiration,” stated Mary. The song lyrics take an independent stance for women and men of all traits, and implores acknowledgment from governmental personas.

Back & Forth” is an extremely catchy song about being fed up with shady powerplay in all facets of life… We’ll just let the lyrics speak for themselves:

Back and forth

lamenting the natural course

up and down of a power source

we’re stuck in a game, an oscillation

and I’m borrowed time

i’m reaching a decline

for a twisted rendition

of something more divine”

The title track, “Can’t See The Haters” started out as an instrumental track which Casey composed between midnight and the early morning hours of one single week. Mary was given the song, & told to “run with it”, both vocally and lyrically. Mary explained, “For a while, it was just ‘Sad Song in F’. We wanted something genuine and impactful for this song. It took delving straight into my feels and digging out my most vulnerable self to pull together the exact sound and feeling.” This anthem of a song is a fervent breath of fresh air in the music industry today. “Can’t See The Haters” is quickly becoming an intoxicating, enduring crowd favorite among fans.

Shades’ unique mix of indie pop and alternative hip hop has become a crowd-pleasing genre which the duo has used to gain a massive following in their hometown. It won’t be long before their music is sung by audiences across the nation!

Shades Can’t See The Haters EP-Casts a Brilliant Light through the Darkness Relatable, Gritty and Intoxicatingly Beautiful

Shades_Band

Iowa City Indie pop duo Shades recently released their debut EP ‘Can’t See The Haters’. The band, which consists of siblings Casey Mattes (producer) and Mary Mattes (vocalist) is squad goals. After all, some of the best bands have had the sibling connection (Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance) so it only makes sense that Shades’ undertaking is purely in sync. ‘Can’t See The Haters’ consists of 6 singles, all of which showcase the band’s performance prowess, vocal talents, songwriting skills, and musicianship.

Though Shades is considered an indie pop collective, upon first listen it is evident that their music has a distinct mainstream appeal. Listeners will capture elements of alternative rock, hip-hop and EDM music. Casey and Mary are dialed into the sounds that are current today, the sounds that mean the most to younger audiences.

Even though their music expresses a strong sensibility for what is trendy, Shades’ sound is by no means basic. ‘Can’t See The Haters’ is a complex formulation of luminescent melodies, inspiring lyrical content, and youthful vibrance. Though Shades’ inception is relatively new, it is evident that the respective artists have been working diligently to craft their sounds for quite some time. We’ll take you through the 6 tracks on the EP and share a few highlights, but we highly recommend delving into the sounds of Shades for yourself to gain the full experience.

The Music

The first song on the EP is “Not Really Sorry” which casts a very bright light in terms of ambiance. The song has a pleasantly rebellious flair that is reminiscent to Tay Tay’s 1989. No shade (no pun intended!) we totally love Tay Tay but let’s keep it one to the hundred, “Not Really Sorry” has much more bounce and goes to places where Miss Swift probably wouldn’t dare. The track is edgy but not gritty, spirited but not vexed.

“Not Really Sorry” is layered with ear-pleasing instrumentals, delivering a fun pop sound with a bit of dirty bass making it a perfectly cool club sound factor or a laid-back chill tune. The song presents a fusion of synth-infused EDM, dreamy melodies and cooling ambient waves. Fans of pop and EDM blends will enjoy the festive feel of the song.

Although the track has an elevated feel, the lyrical content contrasts the vibe of the song. Mary expresses some frustration with a relationship and asks some pertinent questions that seem to lead to some form of self-discovery. Mary sings, “I’m not the type to follow your agenda”, which speaks to the freeing feelings associated with being independent. She goes on to sing, “maybe, we’ll see I’ll try to stick around, if you try to hold your ground, there is no guarantee”. This is a theme that anyone can relate to in terms of balancing a relationships and personal aspirations. We get the feeling that Mary feels no regret if she has to shelf a partner, friend or foe and focus on her goals, we can dig that.

The next track on the EP that fans will get to absorb is “Kill The Darkness” a dynamic track with a fantastic hybrid of electronic music elements. As the song progressives listeners will experience a wave of emotions as expressed through vocals and music intertwined. Once again, listeners will encounter a production that deals with the changing tides of human relations. “Kill The Darkness” conveys a conflicted experience that will resound with listeners.

As Mary sings, “we got problems, the list runs as long as the road that’s before us”, she makes no mistake to still mention, that she has “tunnel vision”. We really appreciate being able to experience the raw emotion behind this track which is complemented by the instrumentals. Mary showcases the diverse range of her skills by also spitting a few rap bars on this track, doing so in the most poetic manner.

“Kill The Darkness” starts of with warm set of melodies which quickly transform into electrifying sonic waves and dub sequences which roar across the mix. The track has an interesting tropical vibe that is temperate but also refreshing. The vibe of the track is energetic, uplifting and sensory.

Following, “Kill The Darkness” is the fitting mix, “Rainbowz” which has a grittier edge. At this point in the EP it is clear that the songs are arranged in such a manner to tell a story. “Rainbowz” takes a very direct approach and also has a slightly darker ambiance than the previous tracks, despite its title. The song morphs before the ears, delivering a multifaceted listening experience that journeys from street to dreamy and dark to light with vocal musings.

“Rainbowz” transitions through classical sounding instrumentals to cinematic waves and beyond urban-laced beats. The track has a deep dark base line and sharp percussive accents. Ambient waves peer through the arrangement while stretchy synths linger in harmony with Mary’s vocals which alter from theatrical to gritty rap.

“Rainbowz” is truly an artistic production that is deep in terms of lyrical content and complex in terms of musical production. The song is as aggressive as it is subtle and as uplifting as it is pensive. By the song’s finish, fans will feel an odd sense of elation and a touch of hope as delicate melodies and an epic vocal performance gently fade out.

A song that tells another moving story while showing off the band’s wide rage is “American Dream”. The track offers an orchestrated sound that is mashed up with a folksy feel and retro pop vibe. The song deals with many different topics and issues that are relevant today, making the song timely. Despite the energetic feel of the track, there are some heavy messages expressed through the songwriting.

When, Mary sings, “What would you say if I stood up an walked the fuck away”, listeners can feel frustrations with conventional means. The song is sung from several different perspective which creates an interesting balance in the storytelling. The focus of the song toggles in such a way that it conveys a series of emotions that range from anger and frustration to contentment and resolve. Lyrics that stick out which sum up the experience are “My dream is not your dream, but I really like it”.

Shades bring the tempo down on “Back & Forth”, another powerful song with enticing instrumentals and a compelling vocal performance. “Back & Forth” introduces fans to a different side of Shades, one that will not be experienced in the previous tracks. This song which also delivers quintessential songwriting, is immense though it plays out like lounge staple. Mary gives a sultry vocal performance over grooving sonic layers for a completely infectious experience.

Shades slays on this song in more ways than one. Mary sings, “Catch me and lock me up, cuz you’re in control, you’re on top” and then “ you out of line, a rogue detonator and when your trigger’s pulled my walls are fallin’ down’. We are here for this explosive track that is delivered with such subtlety that it will either hypnotize you into submission or leave you picking up the pieces.

We’re excited about the instrumentals on this track because they are a delectable fusion of throwback synths and futuristic ambient waves with a faint hip-hop vibe. “Back & Forth” is complicated and intoxicatingly beautiful.

‘Can’t See The Haters’ concludes with the title track, a song which starts out with cinematic waves and rich piano melodies. The song performs like a dark street ballad as each layer slowly builds from the dark, converging with illuminated moments before returning to shadowy areas. Fans will enjoy the changing textures of this track which convey feely vibes and an emotional vocal performance.

Shades gives listeners strong lyrical content and powerful songwriting that lingers in the mind touching on realistic complexities. Few artists are able to do this while also bringing good music to the table. Often we are forced to accept one or the other and take the trade-offs as they come for the sake of mainstream entertainment. “Can’t See The Haters” accomplishes the daunting task of putting out great music that speaks to the spirit while delivering powerful messages. Check out the single, “Can’t See The Haters” on Spotify.

Dr. C & the Gris Gris Graveyard Dog Ignites the Scene with Southern Rock Fusion Driving Rhythms and Soulful Melodies Collide

Dr. C & the Gris Gris

Dr. C & the Gris Gris

“Graveyard Dog” the latest music release from the band Dr. C & the Gris Gris is making waves from their base camp of Lafayette, Louisiana and reaching a global audiences. The band describes their sound as “incendiary rock music with a southern twist” (Dr. C & the Gris Gris). “Graveyard Dog” is certainly lighting up the scene and the band is giving one memorable performance that sizzles.

The band delivers a full listening experience to include the deep and soulful sounds of southern rock fused with electrifying rock waves. “Graveyard Dog” performs at a moderate tempo with varied degrees of slow and sultry sounds and colliding frequencies of a higher pitch. The song is sonically textured while garnering attention with synergized instrumentals performed by the band. The feeling of of the song conveys a series of emotions that range from frustrated to elated, exhausted and sometimes playful. Dr. C & the Gris Gris deliver enticing energy and almost hypnotic ambiance for listeners. Rock, country and alternative music fans will enjoy listening to “Graveyard Dog”.

Popular music fans will also enjoy listening to “Graveyard Dog” as it follows a similar path of Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” which was heavily rotated in the mainstream between 2013 and 2014. “Graveyard Dog” however, is less dark in terms of the songwriting. The song has a much lighter feel though it does present some very expressive lyrics and stark metaphors.

One of the first verses on the song includes the lyrics, “I long for the days when she petted my face, like a good ol’ boy”. The band makes a correlation between a pet owner and their dog and a man and a woman’s relationship. The dog provides an interesting metaphor and listeners cannot help but to wonder what the subject of the story is feeling. Are they lamenting the loss of a loved one, are they now disillusioned by this relationship or are they continuing to stay loyal despite being treated like a dog? The song suggests the star of the show is willing to be treated like a graveyard dog who refuses to leave his owner’s side or in the case of this stunning portrayal, a lover’s side.

Dr. C & the Gris Gris recently released an Official Music Video for “Graveyard Dog”. The visuals present a clean and crisp look into the song with a bit of dramatic irony. The video is set against the backdrop of an actual graveyard where the band members are playing their instruments while a dog runs about throughout the scene. The music video is simple, yet effective in conveying the overall message and feel of the tune. The video is set to black and white which provides a nice contrast for the lyrics versus the instrumentation.

Dr C and the Gris Gris Band

The band’s latest release is an evocative performance that is certain to continue making gigantic waves across the music scene. Dr. C & the Gris Gris is one of the few bands we’ve experienced that captures the essence of rock without fail. While their sound is equally as eclectic as it is electric, they still take listeners down home so to speak, calling on the American spirit. “Graveyard Dog” is a powerful song concisely sums up a range of emotions and experiences using familiar metaphors while still taking the time to entertain listeners. “Graveyard Dog” is a rich experience that delivers on great music, meaningful songwriting and all of the feels.

Dr. C & the Gris GrisDr. C & the Gris Gris call Lafayette, LA home and after listening to their sound their roots can further be understood. The band creates a distinct fusion of rock and roll with “hits of Cajun and swamp rock influence” (Dr. C & the Gris Gris). Fans will also hear the band’s inclusive elements of sludge, hard rock and alternative.

The band, which has garnered global recognition stretching outside of Lafayette, is known for giving a phenomenal live show. No strangers to the scene, members of the band have opened up for acts such as Cheap Trick, Fuel, Sevendust and many more.

Dr. C & the Gris Gris have been likened to legendary acts such as The Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Guns’N’Roses and Audioslave to just name a few. The band is known for performing ‘monolithic drums, thundering bass and sleazy guitars (Dr. C & the Gris Gris). We love it!

The band’s debut release is “Hexes with Axes”and it is representative of the band’s signature elixir which fuses “memorable hooks, larger-than-life guitar solos, and in-your-face style” (Dr. C & the Gris Gris). The band is not always setting souls on fire as they have been known to slow down the tempo and kick out a mellow ballad or two. Regardless of what tempo the band performs, they are certain to offer plenty of personality for rock lovers who enjoy a great tune.

Eyal Singer Songwriter

Eyal Singer Songwriter

Tel Aviv-based singer and songwriter Eyal Erlich recently released a collection of singles on the popular music streaming platform Soundcloud. He is a talented musician who performs Indie Alternative Rock. His new song releases deal with topics of life, love and loss.

Eyal Erlich-The Music

Eyal

Eyal Erlich is a multifaceted performing artist that has placed his live recordings on digital for fans who have embraced his sound with vigor. Check out our thoughts on the artist’s latest music releases below…

The Alternative Rock song “All In All”, is an acoustic sounding performance with contrasting melodies. Listeners will feel relaxed when listening to this song. “All In All” is a textured performance which expresses the various facets of rock music from its early ages to present day. Although Eyal’s sound encompasses a variety of influences, “All in All” is performed with great distinction.

“All In All” appeals to the senses. It delivers hypnotizing energy as the singer beguiles audiences with his vocals. Fans will feel a deep connection to the performance. The song moves from frustrated to optimistic. “All In All” channels a diverse range of elements to not only rock and folk music but modern alternative influences.

Observing the songwriting angle on “All In All”, he demonstrates once again his natural inclination as a wordsmith. While the poetic nature of “All In All” is profound, Erlich makes experiencing the performance so easy. The song, while bringing out its own complexities in terms of how the lyrics are arranged, is likely to resonate with fans who are able to connect with the very personal story being shared.

Listen to Eyal Erlich “All In All”

The performer draws fans further into his unique realm of sound with the deep, churning performance on “It Don’t Seem Right”. Though subtle, those that hear the track will sense all of the musical elements of the song in their hearts. Listeners will appreciate the melodies and harmonies as well.

Once again, Erlich shares with fans his wide range and skillful control of each note. Through his vocal performance, fans are not only able to become engrossed in the music but also allow the lyrics to slowly soak the senses. Often times an artist’s unique voice is lost in the sound. Eyal on the other hand creates a delicate balance between both which is undeniably remarkable. Like waves in a rising sea, his voice transitions between low and raspy to slightly elevated and noticeably crisp. The navigation through his vocal performance is comfortably gradual permitting the audience to savor each moment on the song.

“It Don’t Seem Right” is another Alternative Rock performance, however in terms of songwriting, the structure does seem to be built on several popular rock conventions as well as influences from other genres such as blues and folk. “It Don’t Seem Right” offers a very distinct ambiance that is deep, soulful and slightly dusty.  The singer and songwriter shares that the song is about questioning life, music, love and career wondering how a person can feel as if something is just not right though everything seems to be going great.

Listen to Eyal Erlich “It Don’t Seem Right”

Fans who enjoy indie music will love the melodic but often melancholy ambiance on the song “Pain”. The musician, through music and performance illustrates some very heartfelt moments. The song is vastly different from some of the other performances that he has given fans, however it is equally as fitting. With regards to originality, “Pain” is unequivocal.

As we have already established, the songwriter has a very distinct vocal performance. He sings softly over this particular song. He delivers a youthful sounding voice but audiences will still connect with the inspirations that led to developing such intense translations of experiences into music. In fact, the artist tells us that the song is about sexual abuse or the rape of a loved one a topic that is very timely right now.

Eyal boldly presses forth with another display of flawless songwriting. In fact, fans who encountered “Pain” have described the vibe as being intense, touching, heavenly and pure. Erlich performs with a soulful voice that resounds deep within the psyche. He delivers a fresh and unforgettable sound that calmly croons freely.

Listen to Eyal Erlich “Pain”

Another heartfelt song is “Mourning Love”. “Mourning Love” is a moving song that churns out at a slow but building tempo. As progressive layers cascade along this feely performance, Eyal stirs up detailed visuals for audiences.

“Mourning Love” is developed with exquisite instrumentation. Though the song is heavy in terms of ambiance, the musical score is light on the ear. Even when he  quickens the riffs and increases the pitch periodically throughout the performance, it is done so in an aesthetic manner.

The musician clearly has a knack for songwriting and this shows to be true on “Mourning Love”. The verses on the song are incredibly expresses as he slowly delivers each one over the elegant acoustics. He uses relevant symbols to express the depth behind each verse, singing verses such as “although she comes in mysterious ways she shines and shines on” and “when beauty dies” for example.  His songwriting style is easy to absorb and telling enough to be meaningful to the audience. According to the songwriter, “Mourning” is actually about the death of a loved one or lover which of course everyone can relate to at some point in life.

Listen to Eyal Erlich “Mourning Love”

Another song about death is “Rain” which is scored by the melodic sound of a strumming guitar. The singer gives a strong performance with the downtempo recording which is very moving unto itself. “Rain” presents a smooth production with soothing melodies.

On the track, Eyal showcases his songwriting prowess with a collection of poetic lyrics. Through Erlich’s voice, audiences are able to tap into the emotion behind the song and it’s verses. As he sings, “love is a blind adventure”…fans will quickly come to know the intricate metaphors that the singer-songwriter incorporates to tell a very vivid story such as the verses “lay down your empty body” which we think represents a body whose soul has left or “skies sing your gentle breeze” which we feel might reference the spirit of a loved. There are so many lovely yet painful verses on “Rain”, each holding very significant meaning which has thus far been captured by audiences and received well.

The musician has a unique sounding voice which is conveyed through all of his tracks including ‘Rain’. Through his voice, fans are able to experience the music and lyrical content of the song with awe and appreciation. Listeners will get lost in the sadness and pain on this track. Erlich is clearly a talented musician with a compelling voice. He carries a rare tune with indescribable range while sometimes expressing quivering waves which leaves fans lingering with chills up and down the spine.

Listen to Eyal Erlich “Rain”

As fans eagerly await more music from Eyal Erlich, his current fans and followers are raving over his latest song releases. As a singer-songwriter and musician, he is introducing to music lovers an exceptional experience that will remain with them infinitely. Each of the artist’s songs contains his signature style. He delivers heartwarming melodies and compelling verses on every performance and he is in tune with modern nuances while sometimes drawing on conventional inspirations. His music in fact, is inspiring, gathering fans into a very personal realm and sharing intimate musings that they will most often find to be relatable.

Sam Neher is clearly a great musician and fantastic singer. Fans of the art will find this to be true when first coming into contact with the musician’s work. Sam spent over 200 hours in the studio putting together his project ‘Travels to Nowhere’ and we must say that the album is certainly impressive.

On the track, “What You Gonna Do About It”, Sam performs with a soulful voice that has a calming ambiance. He has a youthful tone when he sings, one that will most certainly resound with younger audiences. The song opens up with gentle harmonies sung by Sam along with a musical accompaniment to include a deep percussive sequence, the pensive strumming of a guitar and emotive piano chords. Instrumentally, the song transitions to complement the tonal changes in Sam’s voice and his personality at specific moments on the track. His voice as an instrument works well to communicate the message embedded within his song. As a vocalist, he showcases himself to be a calming force.

As “What You Gonna Do About It” progresses, the song delivers textured sound layers that navigate through various tempos and levels. The track, which is more alternative rock than pop has some very cinematic nuances mostly driven through a compelling string performance which expressed throughout the entire track. There are some pop vibes that are conveyed through some bouncy notes ⅓ of the way through the song when Sam sings, ‘“reap what you sew and I’ll share with you and it’s not a place that you want to see”. This measure quickly morphs into a melodic phrase which then opens up into an acoustic section where the singer scats a few harmonies before converging with the string and percussion-infused chorus.

The lyrical content on “What You Gonna Do About It” is deceived by the title itself. Prior to listening, audiences may expect to hear just another pop song, but this is not at all the case. “What You Gonna Do About It” shares an copious amount of songwriting. Each verse on the song is penned with poetic lyrics. For example, Sam sings, “turning pages on a park bench, the pages of your life that are turning too fast”. He asks, “what are you gonna do about it?”. Sam later sings, waiting on the payphone, and the land line stops ringing”, “what you gonna do about it?”. The verses on the song are powerful and likely to get listeners thinking about significant moments in their life. Sam is sure to let audiences know that he can relate.

Sam uses a selection of vivid imagery to create a sonic experience. Through every verse, fans can visualize with great detail and imagination what is taking place on the track. He brings it down with an inspiring chorus and hook using metaphors such as, “caught in the water of the open sea” and “fire’s in the air like the Fourth of July” and “the story of a leaf in a cloud of blue”. The singer tells audiences that the world isn’t some glitzy show, he wants to know what’s really going behind the facade.

Ravenscroft Anticipated EP Release “Rebel”

Ravenscroft Band

Ravenscroft Band

Orange County-based band Ravenscroft has pre-released two singles from their upcoming EP ‘Rebel’. The two latest music releases, “My Dearest One” and “The Chase” are timeless crowd-pleasers with a slightly nostalgic vibe. The renowned California band offers a small dose of the myriad of styles they are so famously recognized for as fans eagerly anticipate the release of their EP ‘Rebel’.

“My Dearest One” and “The Chase” present a highly-contrasted depiction of Ravenscroft’s ethos. While “My Dearest One” is tranquil and melodic, engulfed in fine chords and subtle waves, “The Chase” is intense, edgy, enraptured in driving rhythms, shredding riffs and high-octane vocals. The diverse range performed on both tracks makes Ravenscroft even more intriguing, taking reinvention to a whole new level.

The Ravenscroft experience has something for everyone though their style is described as alternative rock. Either way, the band’s music is a fantastic alternative to the commons sounds that seem to permeate the airwaves on any given day. If you enjoy rock ballads and 90s alternative, you will love “My Dearest One”. The song has emotive,  a luxe musical accompaniment and moving rock vocals. Dramatic guitar riffs, inspiring bass and powerful percussion creates a dramatic landscape that is reminiscent to bands like Aerosmith and Guns N’Roses.

There is a noticeable juxtaposition between the release of the two singles, as “The Chase” takes on a completely different persona. The song is packed with vigorous energy and elicits a darker ambiance. “The Chase” is a heavy track with a distinct metal feel. While giving an epic vocal performance, and some seriously electrifying guitar riffs, the song is furiously emotional. If you enjoy the sounds of bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and Karnivool, you will love Ravenscroft “The Chase”.

Ravenscroft

Frequently bands are often recognized for their signature sounds, rarely deviating from what is most familiar to fans and if they do depart from what is most distinguishable, they are met with cold resistance, labeled “sellouts”, and later fall off into oblivion. “My Dearest One” and “The Chase” provide a multidimensional perspective on Ravenscroft, the band described by The Indie Music Artist as being, “mesmerizingly melody-driven” (The Indie Music Artist). Ravenscroft clearly is fearless in their approach to experiment with different sounds and the fact of the matter is they are able to reach a wide audience and close generational gaps with ease. With a Twitter fandom of over 41K strong, Ravenscroft is kicking in doors with a vengeance.  Check out one of the band’s most recent videos “The Chase” below.

Ravenscroft-Band

The band performs melodic and hard hitting rock sounds that are soul-driven. Ravenscroft’s sound consists of various influences which they have described as, “best of Old School meets New School hard rock, and Black Sabbath meets Tool, Drowning Pool meets Shinedown, Creed meets Godsmack!”. Reigning with Soul: Zhanè Monique Debuts ‘Legacy of an Empress’ EP Southern Soul Meets Trip Hop on Zhanè Monique 'Legacy of an Empress' EP Release

0

One may be surprised to know that a young artist of today is able to deliver a voice that is reminiscent to the distinct sounds of decades past. With the exception of a few notable performers, music today often seems to lack the substance and talent once experienced with industry pioneers. One young performer from Atlanta, Georgia however, is breaking ground with a fiercely contemporary sound that channels the vibrations of classic soul singers and the modern nuances of a millennial generation. The artist’s name is Zhanè Monique, and she is a young lady whose music seems to be well beyond her years.

We recently got an insider look into the debut EP release by Zhanè Monique titled ‘Legacy of an Empress’. The EP consists of 7 distinct tracks that demonstrate the performer’s diversity as a singer and songwriter. ‘Legacy of an Empress’ conveys itself with regal quality just as the name of the project suggests. As the the EP opens with “Young Teen” a short interlude, it swiftly becomes evident that Zhanè Monique is not your average recording artist nor your average teen. She is a gifted performer destined to leave an indelible mark on the surface of the music landscape.

As Zhanè introduces herself to listeners singing the lyrics, “I’m just a young teen trying to fulfill my dreams” it is clear that the talented artist is on a mission and taking no prisoners. At first glance, Zhanè’s head-turning sound strikes a familiar chord. Fans of Beyonce will gravitate toward Zhanè’s execution of vocals which resound in a similar fashion. She delivers passionate vocals with comparable dexterity and range. There are few artists today, especially in pop that can truly hit a wide range of notes much less sing at all; even fewer female R&B artists are exposed to audiences through the mainstream music, so ‘Legacy of an Empress’ is a refreshing glimpse into a new generation of rising artists.

“Highs & Lows” is a flawless production that emerges with an acoustic feel as Zhanè belts out a mellow tune. The track, which morphs into an eclectic-sounding number expresses unique instrumentals against poetic lyrics.

“Drift” is a progressively modern number with a trendy feel. As Zhanè delivers bold lyrics she pays homage to the “ATL”. The track is an infectious production drenched in flavorful instrumental layers and complex elements.

Perhaps one of the most notable tracks on ‘Legacy of an Empress’ is “Lambs Became Lions” , a powerful number that tells a vivid tale. Using fascinating metaphors, Zhanè delivers a moving experience with a salient message.

Zhanè Monique continues her exquisite story-telling on “Legacy”, a slow-tempo track with distorted instrumentals and deep, soulful lyrics. The track, produced by ZM has a darker feel giving way to her purposeful delivery. The performer demonstrates a vast vocal range on the melodic “Hope”, a powerful track that touches the soul and endears the heart. Concluding the EP with an even stronger finish is “She Can Have You (A World in Chains)”, an unconventional production with captivating lyrics and inspiring instrumentals. Zhanè Monique gives an impressive performance throughout ‘Legacy of an Empress’. The EP is a remarkable blend of R&B, soul, electronic, and alternative sounds with a light hip-hop flair.
