SmartBlackKid

Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter SmartBlackKid is back with a new single titled “Intelligent Blues” from his latest album release ‘The Best of SmartBlackKid Vol. 2’. From the first chord executed by this genuine one-man band, it becomes quickly evident that SmartBlackKid is on another level of artistry.

No stranger to eclectic fusions, SmartBlackKid unleashes a fury of thought-provoking lyrics over a dark and gritty beat. “Intelligent Blues” is reminiscent to the lyrical stylings of Wu-Tang Clan’s own GZA. SmartBlackKid delivers relevant bars in a laid-back manner while exploring deep lyrical content that stimulates the mind. Unfortunately, this experience is all too rare in mainstream music so “Intelligent Blues” is a grand escape from the mundane.

SmartBlackKid is unapologetic in his incorporation of relevant themes into his latest release which make this particular project most timely in every sense of the word. A fitting title for a forward-thinking single is just one of the ironies introduced on “Intelligent Blues”. SmartBlackKid is clearly a revolutionary musician who not only uses his artistic prowess to make great sounding music, but also uses his creativity as a vessel by which to educate and enlighten a wide-reaching audience.

“Intelligent Blues” is one of those songs that simply makes you dig a little deeper, think a little bit more about the world around you. The single is an experience that is worth having regardless of age and gender because SmartBlackKid taps into nuances that almost anyone can relate to.

Vegas-Based Rap Duo Jun & Carter Release “No One Like Us” Sin City We Are Listening

Jun and Carter

Jun and Carter

Vegas-based rap and producer duo Jun & Carter might be only 16 and 17 years old but they are ahead of their time and taking their music as serious as any rap veteran. Casting Sin City in a different light, Jun & Carter recently released their celebratory track “No One Like Us”. The track release comes right on the heels of the duo’s birthdays which are in May (the 1st and 16th respectively). Despite the number of aspiring rappers dropping music on any given day, there is little deviation that can be found in the production styles, lyrical content, and overall delivery of hip-hop music in general. While this may simply be a byproduct of the mainstream popularization of the genre, there are always some artists out in the music space looking to differentiate themselves from all of the rest. Sometimes they are well-received and often, if they stray too far from the familiar sounds that are hot at the moment, they are not. We suspect that Jun & Carter will not fall into this trap. Today, teen artists have access to all types of technology and they are empowered to create music that rival industry veterans and thanks to how music marketing and the industry overall has evolved, they are doing it on their own terms.

Although since its inception, many people believed that hip-hop would eventually die, the upcoming crop of aspiring artists have proven that hip-hop culture and rap itself will continue to live on. Artists like Jun & Carter have proven that hip-hop continues to touch a number of people of all ages, genders, backgrounds, ethnicities, and places around the world. If you don’t believe us, you can check out their latest track “No One Like Us” which has garnered over 3.2M hits on the popular music player Soundcloud.

“No One Like Us” is not unlike any other rap track out there. It consists of the basic conventions needed to develop a decent head-nodding mix. The track will give listeners a lazy hip hop beat with dark bass, eerie melodies, gritty bars, chant-easy hook and boasting metaphors which illustrate how much Better Jun & Carter are compared to the next contender, your basic battle-style rap. The point of difference here will be found in the perspective that the boys deliver which happens to be from that of the 702. Since typically we are exposed to rap artists from places like New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and places like Philly, it’s not too often that we can get a good glimpse into the sounds that are coming out of Vegas in the mainstream. The boys do deliver a slight underground feel, however the track is produced to a high level of quality in terms of sound and beyond their ability to spit some witty bars, the duo actually adds in some pretty solid harmonies on the vocal side. Check out Jun & Carter perform “No One Like Us”, which is now streaming on Soundcloud.

HighRoller DP and LV Jon Release ‘Joint Effort’ Mixtape

0
Joint Effort

Joint Effort

Michigan-based rap collaboration HighRoller DP and LV Jon have teamed up to deliver a rowdy selection of hip-hop tracks on the latest release of their mixtape ‘Joint Effort’. The production is an intriguing listen where every single track has at least one thing in common, ganja. Almost in time to celebrate 420, well depending on where it is legal and worth celebrating, ‘Joint Effort’ is likely an ideal addition to utilize as the soundtrack for your next sesh.

“STFU” the initial song on the Mixtape is a salty track with an angst feel and vexed personality. The track has a mellow laid back feel which contrasts with the edgy lyrics which are delivered in a catchy cadence. The hook, which of course includes a popular shortened slang as per the title is memorable yet simple and gets the point across.

The next track on this mischievous collection is HighRollers, fashioned after the main title of the mixtape. The lyrical flow on this track is clean while the beat is equally as squared away. “HighRollers” is a laid-back listen for fans that are just looking for some chill tunes as they get tangled up in the devil’s lettuce so to speak.

The unbothered energy on HighRoller maintains a steady frequency on “Different”. As the artists discover a way to discuss what appears to be one of their favorite hoppy, they utilize a series of salacious metaphors and cheeky lyrics to deliver an unapologetic performance.

‘Joint Effort’ checks in at “2:30AM” with a track that has an epic introduction that is reminiscent to 90’s west cost rap. Over the top of a deep-reverberating beat with intricate instrumentals, a detailed story is told with a relatively dark energy. The track offers a distinct vibe from the earlier spins on the mixtape though the lyrical content is relatively the same.

The tempo slows down a bit on the track “Phone” which is clearly a track that many different people will relate to. Considering the path of the initial tracks on the project, “Phone” is a surprising twist. The track is still undoubtedly raw, NSFW, and pushing the boundaries with little inhibitions as the character struggles to “find his way home”.

“Let’s Roll” turns down a notch instrumentally, however lyrically it is still on the turn up as clearly DP and LV Jon have their hands full maintaining this smoked out lifestyle their mixtape pays tribute to. Much like the earlier tracks, the track is unrepentant and righteously loyal to the haze.

‘Joint Effort’ is a massive project with narrow scope in regards to content. Though the artists do not stray away from the singular topic at hand, each song delivers its own unique personality. The rap collaboration offers a strong performance that demonstrates distinct lyrical capabilities, the ability to spit entertaining bars and professional production quality in terms of music. The energy of the mixtape remains relatively chill which happens to correspond well with the overall messages delivered across every track. Listeners will appreciate the unrefined appeal of the artists which hold little back while proceeding along with reckless abandon.

Check out ‘Joint Effort’ now streaming on Soundcloud.

One cut on the production that takes the energy up a notch is “You Can’t Get That”. This track has some post-modern production with a deep, gritty feel.  The lyrical delivery on the track is sound with catching bars and an impressionable hook. The flows deliver a solid cadence while the track delivers an addictive, underground feel with a layer of mass appeal.

Another dirty track that rap fans will enjoy on Joint Effort is “Bossy”, an upbeat production with a risqué demeanor. “Bossy” has an energetic party vibe that will likely resonate with the youthful, carefree spirit of today’s young people free from responsibilities and daily pressures of adulating.

Darker vibrations emerge on “Nose Bleed”, a production that is designed with a complex lyrical composition and recognizable references to pop culture terms. The track has an infectious rhythm and unforgettable series of bars. “Nose Bleed” is a wild, reckless ride through lyrical metaphors and vivid imagery.

Rounding out Joint Effort is “Two Puffs”, an ode to professional bluntism if there is a such thing. The cut tells an urban-infused rags to riches story about marijuana and its progressive effects suggesting money is somehow related to its quality. Listeners can expect more uncut lyrics and on this particular track some uncomplicated instrumentals.

Winding things down, “Sunni” is a lively production with some playful melodies juxtaposed with stony lyrics. “Sunni” delivers a slightly sentimental feel despite its brash lyrical content. Overall the track has a pleasant feel but the words conveyed are without a doubt savage by all accounts.

Joint Effort concludes with “Get Some” another distinct production with a noticeable Midwest feel. Wrapping things up with additional raucous, HighRoller and LV Jon assert their position with righteous indignation with a series of dramatic ironies and intoxicating instrumentals. Get more deets on ‘Joint Effort’ and the duo behind the madness, check out the links below.

A.R.T. LIVE Presents Frederick Your guide to a cool summer street look

0

Often when one thinks of hip hop you think of New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta Chicago, New Orleans, etc. Rarely does Florida come immediately to mind unless mentioned. Though the state does boast several notable rappers such as Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, Trina, Plies, T – Pain, and Dj Khaled to name a few. Often times the Miami party scene over shadows the musical talent that lies in the state. This truth is what inspires South Florida music artists like Frederick. The 24 year-old YG, SUPER affiliated hip hop artist hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida is on a mission to break through the spring break, South Beach, and strip club facade that hangs over the Miami music scene.

Frederick got his start later on in his life. He began to take music more seriously when he was 21 years old. This occurred from being around friends who were older than him and that inspired him to express his true self musically. They also pushed Frederick to create his own unique sound. This sound has stuck with him and molded him into the artist he is today.

Though Frederick’s initial start came from outside influencers his motivation for his craft stems from inside. It comes from the idea of introducing a different sound to the city, the amount of fun he has performing music to different crowds and being creative with friends is everything to him. These factors not only drive his motivation but they fuel the creation of his music. It is also the reasoning behind the aspirations he has for himself over the course of his career.

When asked in depth about his ultimate career goals Frederick had this to say, “I have many career goals, but one of them would be to meet Kendrick Lamar! I love him so much! Another career goal is to open the door for other artists from South Florida so that we can prove to other people that we can actually make amazing music as well.” To end the stigmas so often associated with his native music scene could easily be viewed as a daunting task but it’s one Frederick gladly accepts.

Over his career Frederick has had to face several obstacles but with every trouble came a triumph. One of the worst experiences he’s encountered was when he was at a show and a person (who shall remain nameless) told him that his music sucks and that it’ll never make it anywhere. That really got to Frederick for a while. Yet in the same situation came Frederick’s best experience which was performing his music on stage for the first time and looking at the nay-sayer’s shocked reaction once he saw that the people in the crowd fell in love with Frederick’s music. It’s times like these that made the quote “keep on runnin’.” a saying Frederick has come to live by.

Frederick can be followed on Instagram @Fredericktheegreat and on Soundcloud here: https://m.soundcloud.com/fredericktheegreat  Check out some shots of him performing live at A.R.T. LIVE: Soul Night on this post and check out A.R.T. LIVE here.
