Interview with Shades Band Iowa City Indie Pop Duo Breaks Ground With New EP 'Can't See The Haters'

Shades_Band_Interview

This month we are featuring Iowa City band Shades, a brother and sister collabo whose debut EP ‘Can’t See The Haters’ is currently making waves across the music sphere. We wanted to get some further deets on the band’s project and gain some further insight into their ethos. Check out our interview with Shades members Casey and Mary Mattes below.

Shades_Interview_Band

Can each of you share with us how you got started in music?

Our dad is a professional guitar player, so we’ve grown up with music as long as we can remember. I’ve played in small bands with friends since high school, and decided to pursue music on my own while studying it in college. Once I noticed my sister’s passion for the same creative arts, I knew we needed to team up to create something amazing.

What inspired you to team up to form a band?

Music is about expression. We’ve both been through so much, and we know that our fans have too. Mary puts her heart and soul into the lyrics of each song we produce, bringing forward problems that people our age are facing daily. We wanted to find an impactful way to address these issues presented throughout life and make our fans feel as though they’re not alone.

Shades has a very eclectic sound, who would you say are some of your musical influences? What types of music is in your playlists right now?

We’re huge fans of Twenty One Pilots, Jon Bellion, AJR, and Halsey. We’ve also heard that our indie pop sound reminds fans of The Chainsmokers, Daya, and James Blake.

Shades_Cant_See_HatersWhat made you decide to come up with the name Shades for your band? What is its significance?

We wear our Shades so we can’t see the haters!

Can you describe what a typical creative session would be to come up with a new song? What goes into the whole experience that we as listeners hear on the other end.

We’ll be creating some BTS videos to demonstrate the answer to this question. But for now, I (Casey) produce instrumentals and hand them over to Mary. She writes lyrics, we record, and I mix/master the music. Our beats and lyrics stem from very personal experiences.

‘Can’t See The Haters’ is your first EP, how did you decide on the song selections for the band’s debut?

We created an array of songs, but chose these because of their importance in creating our image. They’re based around our band name and everything we stand for. And, man. This EP is just the beginning.

Most kids today are just looking for a good beat it seems, especially in the mainstream. How important do you feel lyrical content is in music?

Lyrics are everything. A song without meaningful lyrics is wasted potential.

As an indie band and being in control of all aspects of your art, are there any difficulties or challenges in putting your music out and if so what are they and how do you manage them?

It’s difficult getting your music out there for just about any band without many industry connections. We’re based out of Iowa City, IA, so that’s a tricky work-around as well. Our band manager, Teressa Mattes, is doing a great job distributing our music to our passionate fans around the globe via the internet. Mary and I are perfecting our live show now, as well as recording more dope tracks for future EPs/albums. We’re going to continue putting in the work! It’s all about the grind, after all.

How long did it take you to work on your EP?

Almost 2 months!

Now that the EP is out, how do you feel about its reception?

We love seeing the feedback on social media outlets such as Instagram and Facebook. Our fans are the best!

Can you tell us a little bit about the music scene in Iowa City?

Iowa City has a very tight knit music scene. Most bands who play here are still in college, except for the occasional more prominent artists who plays at Blue Moose. I’ve played as a solo artist at Blue Moose a number of times, and am looking forward to returning with Mary this year.

What are the best and worst things about working with your brother/sister?

We value family most out of anything out there. It’s amazing to be able to collaborate with the people you know and love, and at the same time work together to bring new experiences and ideas to the table when it comes to creating new music. We both have our own taste in music, so sometimes that delays creating new tracks, but it is always for the best. If we both approve a song we work together to produce, we know that fans of multiple genres and sounds will too!

Are there any other acts that the band would want to collaborate with in the future?

We’re down for anything.

The new year is really just starting and you definitely kicked in some doors with your project, what is next for Shades?

Keep an eye out for our next EP drop at the end of March 2018! It’s as gritty and lux as it gets…

Shades_Band_Interview

Shades is an American indie pop band formed in September 2017. The duo consists of siblings Casey Mattes (producer), and Mary Mattes (singer). Shades is a DIY pop group who writes, produces, and mixes/masters their own material from their home studio in Iowa City, Iowa.

Casey Mattes’ original music has been featured on “Spaced Out Magazine”, “VERSED”, and has won Artist Prolist’s Platinum Spotlight Challenge TWICE within the same year. Mary Mattes has been featured throughout Casey’s original songs over the last 4 years. Mid 2017, the brother and sister decided to combine their talents into the hit duo you see today.

Shades’ music style has been described as “dynamic”, combining elements of electropop, alternative hip hop, and EDM. Their lyrics, written by Mary, are poetry-based and reflect the all-too-real emotional states of many twenty-somethings who struggle to thrive in today’s world filled with hate.

In January of 2018, Shades dropped their first EP, “Can’t See The Haters”, consisting of 6 songs. “You can either let the hate blind you, or you can block it out,” said Casey, referring to their latest release. “This EP both introduces our band name to the world and describes the underlying meaning behind every piece of work we create. We wear our shades so we can’t see the haters, and we encourage you to do the same.” Casey continued, “This EP is just the beginning. We’re so excited to share with you what’s next.”

Their opening track on the EP, “Kill the Darkness”, was written to express the frustration built from the blossoming of an irrational, yet sweet fixation. Mary mentioned that this song represents an expression of consequence; when you let yourself recklessly fall in love with someone you can’t have, knowing damn well you’re diving into some murky morals.

In a nutshell, “Not Really Sorry” is a snarky, taunting song written about rejection. But more so, it’s lyrics represent the celebration of a sheer reluctance to compromise independence for a relationship. “Independence is an empowering trait,” said Mary. “This song for me conveys a realization of self importance and self empowerment… It’s just snarky as heck.”

Rainbowz” is by far the most unique song on the EP, loved by fans favoring all types of musical genres. “Writing this song was a unique experience. At the time I had just become homeless, so I was bunking in my car for the night. With nothing to occupy my attention, my mind fell down a Wizard of Oz rabbit hole, puzzling over how f***ing weird of a story it is, and all the conspiracy theory potential it has… Naturally, that segued into forcefully rapping about rainbows. But, in all seriousness, this song is an adaptation of the story’s concept- an interpretation reflecting my state of mind at the time.”

The statirecally written, romp of a song “American Dream” describes the current state of both our country and the world we’re forever evolving, for better or for worse. “I’m forever going to utilize social and political f***ery for creative inspiration,” stated Mary. The song lyrics take an independent stance for women and men of all traits, and implores acknowledgment from governmental personas.

Back & Forth” is an extremely catchy song about being fed up with shady powerplay in all facets of life… We’ll just let the lyrics speak for themselves:

Back and forth

lamenting the natural course

up and down of a power source

we’re stuck in a game, an oscillation

and I’m borrowed time

i’m reaching a decline

for a twisted rendition

of something more divine”

The title track, “Can’t See The Haters” started out as an instrumental track which Casey composed between midnight and the early morning hours of one single week. Mary was given the song, & told to “run with it”, both vocally and lyrically. Mary explained, “For a while, it was just ‘Sad Song in F’. We wanted something genuine and impactful for this song. It took delving straight into my feels and digging out my most vulnerable self to pull together the exact sound and feeling.” This anthem of a song is a fervent breath of fresh air in the music industry today. “Can’t See The Haters” is quickly becoming an intoxicating, enduring crowd favorite among fans.

Shades’ unique mix of indie pop and alternative hip hop has become a crowd-pleasing genre which the duo has used to gain a massive following in their hometown. It won’t be long before their music is sung by audiences across the nation!

Shades Can’t See The Haters EP-Casts a Brilliant Light through the Darkness Relatable, Gritty and Intoxicatingly Beautiful

Shades_Band

Iowa City Indie pop duo Shades recently released their debut EP ‘Can’t See The Haters’. The band, which consists of siblings Casey Mattes (producer) and Mary Mattes (vocalist) is squad goals. After all, some of the best bands have had the sibling connection (Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance) so it only makes sense that Shades’ undertaking is purely in sync. ‘Can’t See The Haters’ consists of 6 singles, all of which showcase the band’s performance prowess, vocal talents, songwriting skills, and musicianship.

Though Shades is considered an indie pop collective, upon first listen it is evident that their music has a distinct mainstream appeal. Listeners will capture elements of alternative rock, hip-hop and EDM music. Casey and Mary are dialed into the sounds that are current today, the sounds that mean the most to younger audiences.

Even though their music expresses a strong sensibility for what is trendy, Shades’ sound is by no means basic. ‘Can’t See The Haters’ is a complex formulation of luminescent melodies, inspiring lyrical content, and youthful vibrance. Though Shades’ inception is relatively new, it is evident that the respective artists have been working diligently to craft their sounds for quite some time. We’ll take you through the 6 tracks on the EP and share a few highlights, but we highly recommend delving into the sounds of Shades for yourself to gain the full experience.

The Music

The first song on the EP is “Not Really Sorry” which casts a very bright light in terms of ambiance. The song has a pleasantly rebellious flair that is reminiscent to Tay Tay’s 1989. No shade (no pun intended!) we totally love Tay Tay but let’s keep it one to the hundred, “Not Really Sorry” has much more bounce and goes to places where Miss Swift probably wouldn’t dare. The track is edgy but not gritty, spirited but not vexed.

“Not Really Sorry” is layered with ear-pleasing instrumentals, delivering a fun pop sound with a bit of dirty bass making it a perfectly cool club sound factor or a laid-back chill tune. The song presents a fusion of synth-infused EDM, dreamy melodies and cooling ambient waves. Fans of pop and EDM blends will enjoy the festive feel of the song.

Although the track has an elevated feel, the lyrical content contrasts the vibe of the song. Mary expresses some frustration with a relationship and asks some pertinent questions that seem to lead to some form of self-discovery. Mary sings, “I’m not the type to follow your agenda”, which speaks to the freeing feelings associated with being independent. She goes on to sing, “maybe, we’ll see I’ll try to stick around, if you try to hold your ground, there is no guarantee”. This is a theme that anyone can relate to in terms of balancing a relationships and personal aspirations. We get the feeling that Mary feels no regret if she has to shelf a partner, friend or foe and focus on her goals, we can dig that.

The next track on the EP that fans will get to absorb is “Kill The Darkness” a dynamic track with a fantastic hybrid of electronic music elements. As the song progressives listeners will experience a wave of emotions as expressed through vocals and music intertwined. Once again, listeners will encounter a production that deals with the changing tides of human relations. “Kill The Darkness” conveys a conflicted experience that will resound with listeners.

As Mary sings, “we got problems, the list runs as long as the road that’s before us”, she makes no mistake to still mention, that she has “tunnel vision”. We really appreciate being able to experience the raw emotion behind this track which is complemented by the instrumentals. Mary showcases the diverse range of her skills by also spitting a few rap bars on this track, doing so in the most poetic manner.

“Kill The Darkness” starts of with warm set of melodies which quickly transform into electrifying sonic waves and dub sequences which roar across the mix. The track has an interesting tropical vibe that is temperate but also refreshing. The vibe of the track is energetic, uplifting and sensory.

Following, “Kill The Darkness” is the fitting mix, “Rainbowz” which has a grittier edge. At this point in the EP it is clear that the songs are arranged in such a manner to tell a story. “Rainbowz” takes a very direct approach and also has a slightly darker ambiance than the previous tracks, despite its title. The song morphs before the ears, delivering a multifaceted listening experience that journeys from street to dreamy and dark to light with vocal musings.

“Rainbowz” transitions through classical sounding instrumentals to cinematic waves and beyond urban-laced beats. The track has a deep dark base line and sharp percussive accents. Ambient waves peer through the arrangement while stretchy synths linger in harmony with Mary’s vocals which alter from theatrical to gritty rap.

“Rainbowz” is truly an artistic production that is deep in terms of lyrical content and complex in terms of musical production. The song is as aggressive as it is subtle and as uplifting as it is pensive. By the song’s finish, fans will feel an odd sense of elation and a touch of hope as delicate melodies and an epic vocal performance gently fade out.

A song that tells another moving story while showing off the band’s wide rage is “American Dream”. The track offers an orchestrated sound that is mashed up with a folksy feel and retro pop vibe. The song deals with many different topics and issues that are relevant today, making the song timely. Despite the energetic feel of the track, there are some heavy messages expressed through the songwriting.

When, Mary sings, “What would you say if I stood up an walked the fuck away”, listeners can feel frustrations with conventional means. The song is sung from several different perspective which creates an interesting balance in the storytelling. The focus of the song toggles in such a way that it conveys a series of emotions that range from anger and frustration to contentment and resolve. Lyrics that stick out which sum up the experience are “My dream is not your dream, but I really like it”.

Shades bring the tempo down on “Back & Forth”, another powerful song with enticing instrumentals and a compelling vocal performance. “Back & Forth” introduces fans to a different side of Shades, one that will not be experienced in the previous tracks. This song which also delivers quintessential songwriting, is immense though it plays out like lounge staple. Mary gives a sultry vocal performance over grooving sonic layers for a completely infectious experience.

Shades slays on this song in more ways than one. Mary sings, “Catch me and lock me up, cuz you’re in control, you’re on top” and then “ you out of line, a rogue detonator and when your trigger’s pulled my walls are fallin’ down’. We are here for this explosive track that is delivered with such subtlety that it will either hypnotize you into submission or leave you picking up the pieces.

We’re excited about the instrumentals on this track because they are a delectable fusion of throwback synths and futuristic ambient waves with a faint hip-hop vibe. “Back & Forth” is complicated and intoxicatingly beautiful.

‘Can’t See The Haters’ concludes with the title track, a song which starts out with cinematic waves and rich piano melodies. The song performs like a dark street ballad as each layer slowly builds from the dark, converging with illuminated moments before returning to shadowy areas. Fans will enjoy the changing textures of this track which convey feely vibes and an emotional vocal performance.

Shades gives listeners strong lyrical content and powerful songwriting that lingers in the mind touching on realistic complexities. Few artists are able to do this while also bringing good music to the table. Often we are forced to accept one or the other and take the trade-offs as they come for the sake of mainstream entertainment. “Can’t See The Haters” accomplishes the daunting task of putting out great music that speaks to the spirit while delivering powerful messages. Check out the single, “Can’t See The Haters” on Spotify.

Artist Mike Maro Releases The Weekend Remix A Personal Perspective on a Relatable Experience

0
Mike Maro

Mike Maro

UK-based hip-hop artist and rapper Mike Maro just released a remix to “The Weekend”, chart-topping smash single from singer and songwriter SZA. The track was the third single released from her debut album ‘Ctrl’ in 2017. The song was wildly popular and even received a Grammy Award Nomination for Best R&B Performance. There is little wonder why Mike Maro decided to select this particular song to remix a la hip-hop, but fans will discover that there is a little more to the story.

It is important to note that “The Weekend” remix is not a debut project for Mike Maro. In fact, the rapper has released previous renditions of popular songs and freestyles via his YouTube channel over the last year. Thus far, each of the artist’s releases have received ample play and countless nods from fans far and wide.

“The Weekend” Remix is set alongside a sultry composition of instrumental layers that are bear a close resemblance to the vibes of neo-soul. The artist, with laid-back energy, spits a flurry of hip-hop bars speaking directly to a female muse. Mike Maro, who has gained recognition for his previous renditions, asserts himself as a legitimate rapper with some seriously dope skills.

While the mood of the remix is subdue, the lyrics are anything but. While Mike does not travel down the same path that SZA does in terms of theme, he does put his own spin on the track and creates his own visuals through his performance. While SZA is speaking to another female about essentially sharing a man on the weekends, Mike discusses a personal relationship with his own partner. The rapper uses a series of salacious metaphors to explain what he plans to do with his lady love.

The artist tells us that, “‘The Weekend’ remix of SZA’s original touches on my personal relationship and how me and my girl almost always broke up on the weekends, but instead made up and resolved it all before things got worse”. We can respect an artist that decides to bare himself to the world. He goes on the say, “I made the song reflect my own life as opposed to the original which was more flirty”. Drawing on an intimate will certainly impact with fans who will find the overall theme of the remix to be very relatable. Check out the video below.

Mateo Ahki Selena-An Infectious Hip-Hop Track Underground Vibes Meet Mainstream Smash

0
Mateo Ahki

Mateo Ahki

Jersey City music artist Mateo Ahki recently released “Selena” a new hip-hop fusion with dark beats and salacious lyrics. The track is highly-infectious as it catches the attention with bang up hook and imaginative bars. Mateo Ahki is a bright artist with a unique flair for the original. Selena which has evolved into a household name and pop-culture staple continues to re-emerge in different forms whether it is to pay homage to the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla Perez or the Disney star turned pop sensation Selena Gomez, the name has its own inherent power to evoke a myriad of emotions for music fans.

Judging by his latest release, Mateo Ahki is a formidable emcee who has crafted a signature style that is signed, sealed and delivered specifically for the masses. While “Selena” has a dusty underground vibe, the song is righteously addictive and has mainstream smash hit qualities. The track which is entertaining offers a slight party feel with a distinct street edge. Though Mateo hails from New Jersey, fans who dig the sounds of Southern rap, will enjoy listening to “Selena” which advances at a slower, laid-back tempo.

Mateo spits his bars across the track in a deep tone. The artist maintains a balanced performance in terms of the tone of his voice however, he does show off his personality when he nails some accents at the end of every hook. Mateo has an ear-pleasing rap cadence that conveys the lyrical content of the song effectively. His voice in combination with the instrumentals are expressed in a steady manner, creating a seamless hybridization of sound factors for listeners.

Throughout the track, Mateo demonstrates his skill as a lyricist. During “Selena” he drops some famous names in pop culture outside of Selena such as Venus and Serena, Bruce Wayne and Wonder Woman, Gina, and Aaliyah just to name a few. His metaphors are relevant and his topic of discussion is lighthearted. Fans from across several generational spreads will recognize these references and quickly find the irony in Mateo’s mentions which is affirmatively dope.

In addition to the track release itself, Mateo dropped a music video for “Selena” which is currently streaming on YouTube. The video was released on February 7th and has already locked down over 4,000 views in just a few short days.

The music video for “Selena” is nothing short of pro status. Set against several different backdrops inspired by the city lights and night liffe, “Selena” progresses with Mateo Ahki transitioning through different frames spitting flows solo and among his camp. Visuals of female actress who we presume is symbolic for Selena are woven in between the video’s frames throughout the display. Check out the video for “Selena” below.

Watch Mateo Ahki “Selena”

About “Selena”, Mateo says the song, “takes listeners on an emotional roller coaster as they experience many different creative sides”

The artist is clearly a stunning creative that will shake things up on the music scene. Judging by the time that went into producing his video, Mateo is on another level while the rise to the top gets even more fierce and competitive for independent artists who are now making music on their own terms. With a style that is difficult to match and a sound that is all his own, Mateo Ahki will be a strong force to reckon with. We can’t wait to see what’s next on the menu for this young creative who is seriously serving up some solid rap skills.

Mateo Ahki is hoping to “bring a new sound to the game” as he states. His music is a blend of hip-hop, R&B, alternative music and many other popular styles. Mateo creates what he describes to be “musical masterpieces” while showcasing his wide range as an artist. These elements can be experienced on his most recent track “Selena”. Look for Mateo Ahki’s EP release, coming soon. In the meantime, follow the links below to learn more about the artist and his music.

King Solomon Illuminate the Dark Speaks Volumes A Personal Journey through Faith

0
King Solomon

King Solomon

Recording artist King Solomon recently released his album ‘Illuminate the Dark’. The album depicts a very personal and emotional journey of one man who is led to faith through his experiences. According to King Solomon’s Official Website, ‘Illuminate the Dark’ is an honest look into faith and spirituality from the approach of a prodigal outsider coming back in.” (www.kingsolomonmusic.com). Through a combination of performances which include a fusion of sounds, King Solomon sheds a reflective light on the turmoil that many may face when coming to know the Lord.

The album opens up with the title track “Illuminate the Dark” (ft. Jay Singh). The production is scored by a downtempo beat, pensive melodies and a series of poetic rap bars. King Solomon delivers a powerful story while exuding intense emotion. His lyrical performance on this song is inspiring, uplifting and his words resonate with listeners. Artist Jay Singh lends R&B vocals on “Illuminate the Dark” which are a great complement to the performance.

King Solomon sends out a moving messages for fans. He challenges listeners to consider what it means to be shown the light and path. “Illuminate the Dark” is a track that not only offers fans a captivating beat, but it also delivers compelling lyrical content. King Solomon has an infectious cadence that is raw and feely. Each bar will leave an indelible mark on the psyche.

Check out the Video for “Illuminate the Dark” (feat. Jay Singh)

King Solomon kicks the story up a notch on “Altar Call”, a track which is certain to leave chills behind. “Altar Call” opens with a sequence of beautiful piano chords and slowly building synths which do not overshadow King Solomon’s voice. He performs with a combination of spoken word, rap lyrics and sung verses. The song opens up with a humble prayer that is offered up to the Father.

Throughout “Altar Call” fans are given a look into the conflicted world that is associated with turning from faith or choosing to walk by faith. King Solomon seems to cry out over this track, washing it with tears of a very personal confession. After an encounter with the Savior, he shares from different perspectives what a life of doubt holds. King Solomon teaches fans that even though living by faith is not easy, it is worth it to be welcomed into the arms of the Father. By the end of the song, King Solomon sets aside all things worldly and returns to faith.

King Solomon introduces another collaboration on “Yahweh” (feat. Truthz & Moyege). The title of the song references the Hebrew term for God. “Yahweh” through soulful melodies, uplifting vocals and another set inward rap bars delivered courtesy of King Solomon. King Solomon shares with fans a series of questions that arise after reading through the bible. The questions delve into themes about purpose, where God exists, and if God is able to hear the calls of his followers. As King Solomon croons, “I’m facing a terrible crisis of faith”, listeners are encouraged to dig deeper into the meaning of the term “Yahweh”.

The questions that King Solomon offers up are highly-relevant and likely lingering in the minds of followers whether they are convicted or still sitting on the fence. King Solomon challenges the stereotypes of religion and interpretations that are often taught to instill a fear of God vs. fearing Him with reverence.

“Yahweh” is a beautiful production that handles some pertinent themes. Through it’s infectious performance, the track makes it feel easy to explore and ask questions to gain further clarity on what it means to call on the name of the Lord. King Solomon is not afraid to engage in discussions that need to be had, conversations that will advance humans forward into greater insights.

The next cut on the album is “Be a Man”, an upbeat track with an equally as energetic beat. The synth-driven production continues to navigate through the world of confusion of living between two worlds. Using a series of furiously laid bars, King Solomon attempts to reveal answers to the questions of why. Why encompasses the stereotypes and generalizations linked to the idea of what it means to be a man.

One thing that is fascinating on not only “Be a Man” but the entire album thus far, is how King Solomon ventures into a places that are likely in heart of individuals of all walks of life. On the track, he lists one by one the expectations of the of the world. Fans will experiences the frustrations of simply trying to exist in a world where people are telling you what you should and shouldn’t be in one way or another. “Be a Man” is a song that will resonate with anyone who encounters it as it provides an authentic view into the struggle of just living out each day.

“Focus” emerges on the album behind “Be a Man”. The track delivers soulful melodies with jazz-infused instrumentals. King Solomon continues chronicling worldly nuances that have led to the decline and various imbalances on a society level. The artist makes it known that he is here to evoke change if not have a direct hand in it. Where there is no hope, King Solomon is here to change that.

While there may be times when believers have a narrow focus, King Solomon finds through his song that party of the journey is to give attention to issues that are affecting the world beyond the bible. He says abruptly, “I am chasing kingdom glory, that doesn’t mean that I can’t be focused”. This is a valid point to consider when thinking about one’s personal journey and its impact beyond self.

The next song on the album is “Lullaby” (feat. Anjee). “Lullaby” is a distinctly melodic track with subtly orchestrated instrumentals. The title of this song is ironic as it conveys a childlike ambiance however the content delivered on the song is far more mature in terms of coming to a greater level of understanding.

“Lullaby” is the type of song that provides comfort and reassurance that “it will be alright” as Anjee sings. Every once in awhile, even those individuals who walk by the word need to be reminded that they are free to experience human emotion. Often times we are led to believe that a life based on faith means a separation from all worldly concepts, including love, but with this piece we are reminded that this is not the case. King also sheds some light on the type of artist he will be moving forward, not limiting himself to what is stereotypically expected of a ‘gospel’ rapper.

King Solomon invokes the name of the Lord on “Oluwa Provide”. “Oluwa” references a Yoruba term that is also used for “God”. On the track, which consists of tropical melodies and a warm beat, King Solomon asks “Oluwa” to light his path. King Solomon shares that he is a little apprehensive about taking the journey and isn’t quite sure what to expect.

Sometimes the road to redemption feels lonely however, knowing you can count on the Lord to guide you along your journey brings comfort. The artist shows audiences that it is okay to ask for help along the journey. The Almighty is there to illuminate the road ahead but the believer must continue to walk. Before the end of the song, King Solomon finds resolve and confidence in the Lord’s ability to be a light along the path.

The textured tropical vibes continue on “Everybody Cries” (feat. ërin Hebrews). “Everybody Cries” is a lighthearted production with gentle melodies and a captivating dance beat. The lyrical content on the track is inspirational, telling audiences that it’s okay to cry if you want to. Fans will find this song to be ironic as King Solomon makes references to familiar elements in a world where we are taught to hold our emotions inside.

Through, “Everybody Cries” opens up a whole new world of enlightenment while challenging the status quo of societies and cultures far and wide. King Solomon is not afraid to go there and makes it very much known that everybody cries, figuratively and literally. The song is a powerful showcase of King Solomon’s innate ability to be original.

Ironically, “Sinking” (feat. ërin Hebrews) expresses the challenges of walking a different path than the majority and what becomes of it. “Sinking” is a song that expresses feelings of abandonment and vulnerability. King Solomon’s performance along with ërin Hebrews is fraught with angst and frustration which are conveyed through the artists’ voices but still, within the song is a measure of hope.

Fans will also relate to this song especially if they are struggling with faith in a realm where it may not always be considered a popular choice. You can literally feel that you are being pulled in different directions and desperate for relief. “Sinking” is a song that will make you feel uncomfortable but hopeful.

The realization that faith can be exhausting is expressed on “Tired (Small Voice) [feat. Moyege]. By this song on the album, King Solomon has shared with listeners an epic battle against the norm while fighting hard to uphold the power of the blood. You can imagine what it is like to traverse over a shaky terrain where you are just one of a few, a minority an individual who has turned in a different direction from the crowd.

Consider, the excursion that sometimes meets resistance, often leaves you in a desolate space and sometimes brings danger but still in your heart, you must continue to persevere. You continue pushing through because you know that on the other end of the journey is something far more glorious than words can describe. The aforementioned is the experience that King Solomon shares on “Tired”. For anyone who feels like giving up and turning away from the path, King Solomon offers more powerful words of encouragement.

The weary mood on “Tired” finds rejuvenation on the track “Rise (feat. Anjee)”. “Rise” is another stirring track which metaphorically lifts believers up after peril. One can expect that walking by faith is no easy trek. A faithful follower can anticipate being beaten and bruised mentally and sometimes physically but even if you are at lowest as King Solomon and Anjee tell us, “you can rise”. “Rise” is an intoxicating track provides encouragement, cheering believers on like that little voice inside that tells you to keep pushing.

As ‘Illuminate the Dark” starts to wind down the track, “Hallowed Be Thy Name” (feat. Bethia Morris & Joshua Kilonda) takes on an optimistic tone. King Solomon is not afraid to let it be known that there was a time when his faith did fall by the wayside, however as part of the experience he was able to rediscover joy and enlightenment.  The experience of rolling away darkness and bringing in the light is a very personal story, one that will inspire hope and redemption, something that souls may be in desperate need of.

“Hallowed Be Thy Name” is a very musical production that is scored by festive pianos, progressive percussion and electric guitars and synths. The song delivers a strong feeling of resolve while performing as an inspirational piece. “Hallowed Be Thy Name” casts a gorgeous light upon the name of God and all that believers are able to bear witness to.

‘Illuminate the Dark’ concludes with the acoustic stylings of “A Love Song”. At this point on the album, fans meet with a brand new King Solomon who summarizes the adventures involved in coming to eventually know Christ and everlasting love. While King Solomon is sure to mention that there aren’t enough words to express exactly how deep his love runs, he gets his point across.

“A Love Song” conveys as the end of one journey and the start of another which will lead to the ultimate destination. King Solomon places his heart on this track in which listeners will again be able to feel the emotions poured into every lyric and measure played. King Solomon speaks to fans from a very reflective point of view and the message can easily be digested over the easy tone of the performance.

‘Illuminate the Dark’, a powerful album by King Solomon could not have been released at a better time. When humanity as a whole has seemingly reached new and unsettling crossroads, it is comforting to know that there are artists using their platforms to make a difference. Whether it is to lead people to faith or to offer stories of hope, music is a powerful tool and the voices behind the music even stronger.

King Solomon has presented fans with a rare, adventurous and sometimes tumultuous journey into the arms of the Father. His performance on ‘Illuminate the Dark’ offers a striking amount of authenticity as fans will be able to connect with the emotion in his voice on every single album track. From playful melodies to soulful musings, the album delivers a myriad of vibrations that are moving and spirit-filled.

King Solomon’s lyrical content on ‘Illuminate the Dark’ is raw and full of truth. He showcases a reflective body of work that speaks to a number of themes relating to religion and what it means to walk by faith. Fans are confronted with the cliche “good, bad and the ugly” parts of the journey which may mean something different for every listener. Still, King Solomon engages in relevant conversations over intense rhythms and emotional overtures. He exemplifies courage in the face of adversity and celebrates individuality while acknowledging the role one faithful individual in a global community.

‘Illuminate the Dark’ is drawn from a fascinating perspective. The album engages listeners while also entertaining them with modern-sounding music. King Solomon is a lyrical force who exudes confidence on the revealing project. King Solomon communicates feeling through his cadences at times allowing listeners into a very intimate spaces. ‘Illuminate the Dark’ is intricate by design but the messages are anything but. While there are not enough words to truly describe the power of this album, but we will leave you with the thought that fans can expect the entire project to be life changing.
